Werribee irrigation Modernisation – Stages 1-5

Werribee

Client:

Comdain / Jaydo

Scope:

GLE has played a key role over an 8-year period in the staged delivery of the Werribee Irrigation District Modernisation Project, which replaced over 40 km of ageing concrete-lined open channels with a fully buried, pressurised GRP pipeline network. In Stage 1, GLE directly constructed over 2 km of large-diameter GRP pipeline in collaboration with Comdain Infrastructure. For the subsequent four stages, GLE provided plant, labour, and support services to Jaydo Construction to complete approximately 38 km of DN1200–DN300 GRP pipeline installation. The project also included the installation of approximately 170 flow meter and property connection assemblies to maintain service to agricultural customers. A critical challenge of the project was the need to construct within a live irrigation system servicing high-value horticultural farms. Each construction stage was tightly sequenced to align with fortnightly irrigation schedules, requiring temporary integration between new pipeline sections and the existing open channel system to ensure uninterrupted water delivery. Production was key to install the new pipeline up to section valves before the next irrigation date, requiring significant coordination with preparation crews and big metres from the lay crews. Working within active paddocks and saturated ground conditions demanded logistical flexibility. GLE’s purpose-built tractor and tipper-trailer configurations proved essential, enabling the efficient delivery of pipe and materials via local road networks and across difficult terrain without causing damage to productive farmland. GLE’s extensive experience in pipeline construction, combined with its adaptability to live operational environments, was instrumental in the successful delivery of this long-term, multi-stage infrastructure upgrade
